Barbie® Introduces Its First Doll with Down Syndrome

Mattel, Inc. has announced the addition of a Barbie doll with Down syndrome to its line, Mattel, Inc. hopes to encourage even more kids to identify with Barbie and have the dolls reflect their surroundings.

The new doll aims to encourage kids to use play to tell more stories. Barbie is meant to help all kids identify with her while also encouraging them to play with dolls that don't look like them, which will help them develop empathy and understanding.

Barbie worked closely with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), which empowers people with Down syndrome and their families by providing resources, promoting policy change, and engaging with local communities, to produce an accurate representation of a person with Down syndrome. The design process, including the doll's sculpt, clothing, accessories, and packaging was influenced by the NDSS guidelines.,

Along with carefully chosen clothing and accessories that were influenced by Down syndrome awareness symbols and colours, the new doll has a face and body sculpt that are more representative of women with Down syndrome.

The doll also has pink ankle-foot orthotics (AFOs), which provide support for some Down syndrome children. Barbie, the most inclusive doll line available, is essential in influencing young children's experiences and promoting inclusivity.
