Netflix and General Motors (GM) announced a new collaboration that aims to encourage the usage of electric vehicles (EVs) by featuring EVs in Netflix-produced content.
During the SuperBowl 2023, a commercial showcasing both firms' dedication to a more sustainable future will air as part of the strategic alliance's launch. According to both this is the start of a organic partnership where both of companies are committed to a sustainable future, and so it’s not product placement.”
GM had pledged to develop 30 new electric models by 2025, and has for the past two years trotted out high-concept Super Bowl ads to introduce them to the public. GM acknowledges the fact that a worsening global climate has placed strains on the automobile industry.
Netflix on the other hand had already committed in 2022 to put at least one electric vehicle in every series or movie that it directly produced. . Netflix is also working to improve the sustainability of its productions behind the scenes by optimizing energy use, electrifying it and decarbonizing the rest.
With this collaboration, Netflix creative will have considerable creative control over how and when EVs appear. Netflix will highlight electric vehicles of all types through the new programme in its original programming, not just GM models.
Netfilxs says that it would put a dedicated team that provide educational information and briefings on the new ‘EVs On Screen’ initiative however the directors and show runners will get to determine how an EV might fit into their story organically. Then, Netflix will aid in determining the appropriate vehicle types and sourcing vehicles as needed.
GM’s says that the deal is part of a “strategic alliance” and does not include paid product placements. Throughout the next year, however, GM EVs – including Chevrolet Bolt EUV, GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq – will appear in select Netflix programs.
