The climate action platform Net Zero Now and the cosmetics giant L'Oréal have joined forces to create an industry-first programme called the Net Zero Salons Programme that will make it possible for hair salons all throughout the UK and Ireland to begin the road toward Net Zero.
The team wants to help salons create custom programmes that would help them calculate, monitor, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
By offering personalised and attainable recommendations, the programme aims to make the transition to becoming a "Net Zero Salon" accessible for all salons. These recommendations range from switching to renewable energy and becoming more energy efficient to improving waste treatment and management, lowering water consumption, and incentivizing staff with ride-to-work programmes or promoting public transportation options.
This effort aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by opening this program to over 30,000 salons in the UK and Ireland after a pilot test found that the typical appointment generates about 3.1 kg of emissions.
The Net Zero Salons Program is a component of L'Oréal Groupe's larger 2030 sustainability strategy, L'Oréal For The Future, which includes a number of quantifiable goals for the environment, including water, biodiversity, and natural resource use.
With its "Hairstylists for the Future programme", L'Oréal is dedicated to assisting its partner salons and the larger industry in adopting more sustainable business practises as part of this roadmap.
Through a partnership with the Green Salon Collective and the new L'Oréal Water Saver, a showerhead that uses jet-fusion technology to significantly lower a salon's water consumption at the backwash, which is slated to roll out in 2023, this already established programme has been developing creative solutions to support salons across environmental pillars such as waste and water.
