Instead of being thrown away at a landfill after serving their purpose, the bags can be composted at the convenience of customers' homes or at the closest recycling facility. The hybrid bags are produced of 23%–25% bio-based components, which also aid in lowering the usage of fossil fuels.

The global network promoting fashion industry innovation, Fashion for Good, is stepping up its continuing work to bring better packaging for clothing and footwear. In collaboration with German retailer C&A and Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.), the organisation has started the Home-Compostable Polybag Project, a six-month pilot programme that will test substitutes for the common single-use plastic bags used to ship and protect goods in the apparel and footwear sectors. The project's objectives are to identify alternate end-of-use for waste that is destined for the landfill and to give consumers who do not have access to municipal composting programmes an at-home option.

An estimated 180 billion are produced each year according to Fashion for Good. Virgin polybags usually use fossil fuel to produced their plastic, have a high carbon footprint and are rarely recycled and usually landfilled.

The newly launched bags’ bio-based polymers are generated from biological feedstock, such as food crops, organic waste and wood pulp. The final compostable plastic blends are generally derived from a mix of bio-based materials and petroleum feedstocks. The polybags used in the project contain 23-25 percent bio-based content. The new initiative will see LS&Co. and C&A use bags made from bio-based material and can be composted at home or in community compost piles. TIPA Corp. and Greenhope, helped create the bags.
