Lush looks at defending indigenous communities with their new Land Defenders, Water Protectors campaign.

Mar 9, 2023

Land Defenders, Water Protectors is the name of a new campaign by Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics. This initiative aims to call attention to "Indigenous land defenders and water protectors from around the world, and Indigenous women and girls in particular on the front lines of the climate crisis.
Lush Cosmetics has started a new campaign in support of Indigenous land defenders and water protectors from all over the world in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples Rights International and the Blue Planet Project. Although Lush is not new to working in solidarity and partnership with Indigenous activities and communities, the attention on land defenders and water protectors now is particularly important.
Currently, Indigenous women who defend their land and waters from pollution, theft, and destruction are harassed, imprisoned, or killed.
Lush is releasing a limited-edition bath bomb called Guardian of the Forest in an effort to raise $350,000. Each sale will contribute $8.25 (less taxes) to the fights of Indigenous communities whose lands are threatened by deforestation and fossil fuel extraction.

In support of this initiative, Lush is releasing a short documentary on its YouTube channel that features Casey Camp-Horinek, a longtime advocate for Native American rights, environmentalist, and traditional Drumkeeper for the Ponca Pa-tha-ta, Woman's Scalp Dance Society. Through the Phillips 66 refinery, fracking and injection wells, a carbon black factory, and other industrial sites that contaminate the land and water of the Ponca Nation, Camp-Horinek gives readers a "toxic tour" of Ponca territory in Oklahoma.

Lush has collaborated and functioned as an ally with to Indigenous People for more than ten years. Lush most recently supported the frontline defender groups like Aliados, Amazon Watch, Sunrise Movement, RETREET, and Climate Action Network Canada during Giving Tuesday in 2019.

Lush collaborated with Indigenous journalists, intellectuals, and activists to create Resistance and Resurgence in 2021. Lush's Charity Pot has provided twelve Land Defender and Water Protector organisations with a Frontline Defender Fund of $20,000 in addition to the $350,000 that will be raised by this campaign.
